About Us

It’s more than hair.

Crowned With Care is an initiative created to support Black and mixed-heritage young people in the UK care system with the hair care, cultural connection and confidence they deserve. We provide a blend of hair education, hands-on styling and access to the right products, because we believe hair care is cultural care and cultural care matters.

What makes our work different is our mission to integrate Afro and textured hair care into everyday practice within social care settings. For many young people, this isn’t just about styling. It’s about identity, dignity, and being able to stay connected to their cultural roots even when they’ve been displaced from their home environment

Why We Exist

8 in 10

Eight in ten foster carers in the UK are white.

This means the majority of Black and mixed-heritage young people with Afro-textured hair are placed in trans-racial homes, where carers may not have the knowledge or training to support their hair and identity needs.

Nationally, there is still:

  • A lack of culturally relevant training in residential homes, local authorities and foster settings

  • High levels of hair damage and breakage reported among Black children in care

  • Gaps in representation and belonging, which can affect confidence, self-esteem and cultural identity

Crowned With Care exists to change that.

Representation

every child deserves to see themselves reflected.

Dignity

every child deserves care that honours who they are.

Confidence

every child deserves to feel proud of their crown.

Since launching, we have:

  • Supported 70+ young people through hands-on care and education

  • Delivered 2 community events with more upcoming

  • Brought together 30+ stylists and volunteers across London

  • Won the 2025 BBC Make a Difference Award

  • Been featured on BBC Children in Need, The One Show, and BBC Radio

And this is only the beginning.

What We’ve Done So Far

Our Vision

Our vision is to make culturally relevant hair care a normal, recognised and fully supported part of youth wellbeing across the UK.

By 2030, we aim to:

  • Reach 10,000 young people through care-based community events

  • Train 500+ carers, stylists and volunteers in inclusive Afro-textured hair education

  • Partner with schools, care homes, local authorities and charities nationwide

  • Build a recognised model that can inform national policy and cultural care standards

Because when a young person feels seen in the smallest details, like their hair, everything changes.

Our Approach

We use a simple three-pronged approach:

1

Hair Education

For both carers and young people, giving them the knowledge, confidence and skills to maintain healthy Afro-textured hair.

2

Hair Styling

Hands-on support from trained stylists who understand cultural care and protective styling.

3

Hair Products

Providing access to the right tools and products that many young people in care otherwise go without.

We also host community events, creating spaces where young people in care can connect with each other, build friendships and feel part of something that reflects who they are.

Our Story

Crowned With Care was inspired by personal experience.
Growing up, I spent a lot of time with my grandparents, who were foster carers. Every time they welcomed a Black or mixed-heritage young person into their home, hair was always one of the biggest pain points. Many young people arrived with breakage, scalp issues or damaged hair simply because they hadn't had the right care or support.

Seeing this over and over again made one thing clear, something needed to change.

That’s what sparked the idea for our pilot events, and ultimately, Crowned With Care.
