The UK's first verified directory of DBS-checked, culturally competent Afro hairstylists — built for local authorities, fostering agencies and social workers.
The Problem
When a Black or Mixed-Heritage child enters the foster care system, one of the most underserved aspects of their care is their hair.
Many foster carers have no experience managing Afro, curly or coily hair. And those who do, struggle to find the right hairstylist for their young person. There is no standardised resource for social workers and foster carers to access.
No verified list of professionals who understand both the cultural significance of Black hair and the safeguarding requirements of working with looked after children.
Introducing the Crowned with Care Register
The Crowned with Care Register is a curated, verified network of Afro hairstylists who are DBS-checked, culturally competent and experienced in working with children in care.
Every stylist on the Register has been personally vetted by Crowned with Care. Local authorities, fostering agencies and social workers can access the Register to find the right stylist for every child — quickly, confidently and safely.

Why it matters
Hair is not a cosmetic concern. For Black and mixed heritage children in care, their hair is a connection to their identity, personal hygiene, their culture and their sense of self. When it is mismanaged it sends a message — even if unintended — that part of who they are does not matter.
The Crowned with Care Register exists to make sure no child in care ever receives that message.

Crowned with Care is a BBC Make a Difference Award winning organisation dedicated to celebrating Black and mixed heritage children in the foster care system through professional hair care, education and community.
Since launching we have delivered experiences across London and Leicester, supported children who had never had their hair done professionally and equipped foster carers with the knowledge to care for their child's hair at home with confidence.
