A Day of Beautiful Hair and Real Conversations:

Crowned with Care at SALT Borough

Last March, Crowned with Care landed in SALT Borough, a contemporary hair salon in the heart of Borough Market, for a day of beautiful hairstyles and real conversations.

Throughout the day, children and carers walked through the door into a space curated for the exploration and validation of Black and mixed-heritage young people's identity. A space that said, clearly and without hesitation: you are expected, and you matter here.

The Ground Floor: A Warm Welcome

From the moment families arrived, the intention was to make the transition easy. Stylists had been matched with their young person ahead of the day, so when children walked through the door they weren't meeting a stranger. They were being greeted by someone who already knew their name and had an idea of the style they'd be creating together.

Light refreshments were on hand, and the atmosphere was warm, unhurried and celebratory from the very first moment.

The Second Floor: Hair Boxes and Books

Up on the second floor, something quieter but just as powerful was happening. The hair box stations gave every young person the chance to explore products — learning what each one was, what it did and why it mattered for their hair — before packing their own personalised box to take home. Alongside them, shelves of books by Black and mixed-heritage authors offered stories told by people who looked like them.

Representation like this is so important. This kind of validation is needed by everyone, but especially by a young person who is looked after by carers who may come from a different cultural background. The second floor became a space for both young people and carers to learn, explore and connect and it showed. Carers lingered, asked questions, picked up books. Young people took their time choosing their products.

The Top Floor: The Style

Away from the noise, the top floor was calm and focused. Professional, DBS-checked hairstylists, recruited from the local area, worked with the young people to choose their style and then expertly brought it to life.

Recruiting locally is something we do intentionally. We want carers to leave our events not just inspired, but connected with a stylist nearby who understands their child's hair and who they can return to. Our events are a starting point, not just a one-off.

Every appointment is also an opportunity for carers to sit alongside their child, watch, ask questions and begin building the knowledge and confidence to care for their child's hair in between.

What Filled the Building

What struck us most on the day wasn't any one moment — it was the atmosphere that grew throughout it. The building filled with conversation. Carers comparing notes, sharing experiences, laughing together, asking each other questions. This is exactly what we set out to create: not just a hair appointment, but a community. A room full of people who get it.

But perhaps the most powerful account of the day came from one of the families who attended. We received this letter shortly afterwards, and it stopped us in our tracks.

"I just wanted to take a moment to thank you so sincerely for everything you did for our girls. They had the most incredible day and haven't stopped talking about it since we left. The warmth, kindness, and care you and all your colleagues showed to every child was so evident, and it made such a difference.”
